Zenwalk 5.0 beta is available for testing

December 29th, 2007

Zenwalk 5.0 will be a major release, introducing several new systems. Firstly, version 5.0 is the first Zenwalk release to introduce the Freedesktop HAL system (Hardware Abstraction Layer). In the past Zenwalk had provided its own hardware hotplug system, but HAL has now been deemed mature enough to fit within Zenwalk’s stability guidelines while giving unbelievable flexibility to hotplug and hardware detection in general.

Noticeable enhancements to Zenwalk found in version 5.0 are the numerous software updates including the latest Xorg 7.3 suite of X servers, drivers, fonts and other software packaged in a modular and easily manageable fashion. Other updates include the latest version of the Iceweasel web browser, the Icedove email client and hundreds more!

The modern and powerful Wicd wifi-browser and configure application replaces Wifi-radar, while the Intel’ (TM) wireless device firmware is provided out of the box and is installed providing the user reads and accepts the Intel license, prompted at the end on the Zenwalk install process. This new licensing acceptance scheme allows users dependent on Non-FOSS drivers and firmware to fully support their hardware without need of searching as well as identifying Non-FOSS software for purists so that they may keep their system inline with their principles.

Following tradition Zenwalk’s default desktop environment is XFCE and is now at version 4.4.2 sporting the legendary Zenwalk desktop layout with a completely new artwork design making Zenwalk 5.0 visually and functionally the most sober and elegant release to date. Read the rest of this entry »

CentOS Linux

August 30th, 2007

CentOS is a freely available Linux distribution which is based on Red Hat’s commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) product. This rebuild project strives to be 100% binary compatible with the upstream product and, within its mainline and updates, not to vary from that goal. Additional software archives hold later versions of such packages, along with other Free and Open Source Software RPM based packages. CentOS stands for Community ENTerprise Operating System.

centOS linux

RHEL is largely composed of free and open source software, but is made available in a usable, binary form (such as on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) only to paying subscribers. As required, Red Hat releases all source code for the product publicly under the terms of the GNU General Public License and other licenses. CentOS developers use that source code to create a final product which is very similar to RHEL and freely available for download and use by the public, but not maintained or supported by Red Hat. There are other distributions derived from RHEL’s source as well, but they have not attained the surrounding community which CentOS has built; CentOS is generally the one most current with Red Hat’s changes. Arch Linux

August 30th, 2007

Arch LinuxArch Linux is a Linux distribution created by Judd Vinet. Inspired by CRUX, it is intended to be lightweight and simple for advanced users. It uses a BSD-style init framework and is largely based around binary packages. Packages are targeted for i686 microprocessors to assist performance on modern hardware.

arch linux preview

Arch Linux uses a “rolling release” system, with new packages provided daily. Its package management permits users to keep systems up-to-date easily. Rather than encouraging users to move between discrete releases, Arch Linux releases are simply snapshots of the current set of packages, sometimes with revised installation software. The first release, 0.1 (codenamed Homer), appeared on March 11, 2002, and the latest is 2007.08 (Don’t Panic), released on August 5, 2007 Read the rest of this entry »

Linux Distribution

August 30th, 2007

Linux distrosA Linux distribution, often simply distribution or distro, is a member of the Linux family of Unix-like operating systems comprising the Linux kernel, the non-kernel parts of the GNU operating system, and assorted other software. Because most (if not all) of the kernel and software packages are free and open source, Linux distributions have taken a wide variety of forms —from fully-featured desktop and server operating systems to minimal environments (typically for use in embedded systems, or for booting from a floppy). Aside from certain custom software (such as installers and configuration tools) a “distro” simply refers to a particular assortment of applications married with a particularly compiled kernel, such that its “out-of-the-box” capabilities meets most of the needs of its particular end-user base.

To provide a Unix-like environment, Linux distributions contain a set of Unix-like utilities and the libraries needed to support them. In full-featured distributions these are generally taken from the GNU operating system. Distributions optimized for size tend to use more compact alternatives like busybox, uclibc or dietlibc.
