Zenwalk 5.0 will be a major release, introducing several new systems. Firstly, version 5.0 is the first Zenwalk release to introduce the Freedesktop HAL system (Hardware Abstraction Layer). In the past Zenwalk had provided its own hardware hotplug system, but HAL has now been deemed mature enough to fit within Zenwalk’s stability guidelines while giving unbelievable flexibility to hotplug and hardware detection in general.

Noticeable enhancements to Zenwalk found in version 5.0 are the numerous software updates including the latest Xorg 7.3 suite of X servers, drivers, fonts and other software packaged in a modular and easily manageable fashion. Other updates include the latest version of the Iceweasel web browser, the Icedove email client and hundreds more!

The modern and powerful Wicd wifi-browser and configure application replaces Wifi-radar, while the Intel’ (TM) wireless device firmware is provided out of the box and is installed providing the user reads and accepts the Intel license, prompted at the end on the Zenwalk install process. This new licensing acceptance scheme allows users dependent on Non-FOSS drivers and firmware to fully support their hardware without need of searching as well as identifying Non-FOSS software for purists so that they may keep their system inline with their principles.

Following tradition Zenwalk’s default desktop environment is XFCE and is now at version 4.4.2 sporting the legendary Zenwalk desktop layout with a completely new artwork design making Zenwalk 5.0 visually and functionally the most sober and elegant release to date.

Please help us to find the last bugs before we can release the final version

Have fun

If you download this release…report any and all problems to Thanatermesis
Mac Users with Nvidia Cards…you are NEEDED…we must work together to ensure the quality of further releases.

There have been several bug fixes on the installer and numerous other bug fixes.
The feature list is below and it is the same as the last release

Features include but are not exclusive to:

Installer: The installer is now included and working, if you experience that the installed mode doesn’t boot, please ask on #elivemac at Freenode

Wireless: Working good with experimental madwifi driver. WEP needs to be tested

IR remote control: Works perfectly and with predefined actions

Backlight and Volume keys: Works by pressing the “Fn” key in conjunction with the backlight or volume keys.

Kernel optimized for MacBooks and patched for special hardware elements

Games: Neverball is a very addictive 3D platform marble game, but on this version of Elive you can use the laptop to interact with the platform of the game. That means you can manipulate the marble by, “TILTING YOUR MACBOOK FROM SIDE TO SIDE!”

CentOS is a freely available Linux distribution which is based on Red Hat’s commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) product. This rebuild project strives to be 100% binary compatible with the upstream product and, within its mainline and updates, not to vary from that goal. Additional software archives hold later versions of such packages, along with other Free and Open Source Software RPM based packages. CentOS stands for Community ENTerprise Operating System.

RHEL is largely composed of free and open source software, but is made available in a usable, binary form (such as on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) only to paying subscribers. As required, Red Hat releases all source code for the product publicly under the terms of the GNU General Public License and other licenses. CentOS developers use that source code to create a final product which is very similar to RHEL and freely available for download and use by the public, but not maintained or supported by Red Hat. There are other distributions derived from RHEL’s source as well, but they have not attained the surrounding community which CentOS has built; CentOS is generally the one most current with Red Hat’s changes.

CentOS’ preferred software updating tool is based on yum, although support for use of an up2date variant exists. Each may be used to download and install both additional packages and their dependencies, and also to obtain and apply periodic and special (security) updates from repositories on the CentOS Mirror Network.

CentOS can be used as an X Window System based desktop but, like RHEL, is targeted primarily at the server market. Some hosting companies rely on CentOS working together with the cPanel Control Panel

Versioning scheme

CentOS version numbers have two parts, a major version and a minor version. The major version corresponds to the version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux from which the source packages used to build CentOS are taken. The minor version corresponds to the update set of that Red Hat Enterprise Linux version from which the source packages used to build CentOS are taken. For example, CentOS 4.4 is built from the source packages from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 update 4. CentOS refers to the source as “PNAELV” (Prominent North American Enterprise Linux Vendor), which is an acronym referring to Red Hat, coined in response to questions raised by Red Hat’s legal counsel in a letter to project members regarding possible trademark issues.

Release history

The first version of CentOS, CentOS 3 build4-rc0, was released in the end of 2003. CentOS 3.1 (version 3, quarterly update 1) was released on March 19, 2004.

CentOS 2, based on version 2.1 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, was released on May 14, 2004.

CentOS 4.0, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4, was released for the i386 architecture and for the IA-64 architecture on March 1, 2005.

CentOS 5.0, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5, was released on April 12, 2007.

Architectures

CentOS supports the same architectures as Red Hat Enterprise Linux:

Inspired by CRUX, it is intended to be lightweight and simple for advanced users. It uses a BSD-style init framework and is largely based around binary packages. Packages are targeted for i686 microprocessors to assist performance on modern hardware.

Arch Linux uses a “rolling release” system, with new packages provided daily. Its package management permits users to keep systems up-to-date easily. Rather than encouraging users to move between discrete releases, Arch Linux releases are simply snapshots of the current set of packages, sometimes with revised installation software. The first release, 0.1 (codenamed Homer), appeared on March 11, 2002, and the latest is 2007.08 (Don’t Panic), released on August 5, 2007

Package management
Arch Linux is primarily based on binary packages. These packages are managed using the Pacman package manager, which handles package installations, upgrades, removal and database queries. The packages for Arch Linux are obtained from the Arch Linux package tree. Currently there exist five different repositories: current, which contains all the packages needed to set up a base Linux system; extra, which holds packages not required for the base system, mostly alternatives for packages in current; unstable, which has packages for programs in development; testing, with packages that have pending bug reports or may be unreliable; and community, which contains packages put together by Arch Linux users and contributors. In addition to these official repositories, a number of user-contributed repositories exist, often with customised or newer versions of the standard software packages.

Packages are created using the Arch Build System (ABS). This ports-like package management system consists of repositories of shell scripts and other files which enable packages to be customised and built from source, including rebuilding the entire system using modified compiler flags.

64 Studio is a free Linux distribution based on Debian designed for creative users on x86-64 and legacy 32-bit hardware architectures. It intends to serve as an all-in-one solution for audio and video recording, editing, and other forms of media production.

Since 64 Studio is distributed with a free software license, anyone with a 64-bit computer can install it on their computer (in place of or alongside the well-known Windows operating system). An alternative installer is available for systems with 32-bit processors.Differences with Debian
The major differences between this distribution and basic Debian are a custom kernel with realtime patches applied, some pre-configuration and a custom package selection designed to meet the needs of creative desktop users. Other packages may also be modified to some extent, as are the basic GNOME desktop themes.

Releases
The project released the first beta of 64 Studio, version 0.9.0 code-named ‘Toe Rag’, on the August 1, 2006. The release was named in honour of the all-analogue Toe Rag Studios in London, England.

After eighteen months of development, the project made its first stable release available for free download on 2006-11-29. It is named Olympic in recognition of the work of Glyn Johns and Eddie Kramer at Olympic Studios in London.

The second stable release, version 2.0 codename ‘Electric’, was announced on 27th July 2007. This latest release is named after Electrical Audio, the studio founded by sound engineer Steve Albini in Chicago, USA.
